They are trying to use an SSL (encrypted) session for joining the site so your password won't be transferred in clear text. That is actually a good thing.
The warning you are getting means the SSL certificate they have does not correspond to the site address. That is true. But upon examining the certificate, it is clear they made a mistake when they requested it. Or may be they made changes to the site that would cause this.
I think the site is safe.
