Default Completely off-topic question regarding CSI

Completely off-topic question regarding CSI (yes, the crappy TV show).

My wife loves watching this, be it the Las Vegas, New York or whatever the other one was.

Now, we in the UK have CSI, after all, someone's got to take prints and collect and analyse any evidence found. What truly puzzles me and this may be completely different in the USA, since when does a CSI carry a gun? Fingerprints are pretty unlikely to shoot you. Since when does a CSI interrogate a suspect? Here from what I can gather they are stuck in a lab analysing and writing reports. Since when do the CSI arrest people? Back to the previous comment basically.

Now, this may all be totally different in the States but I am just curious since she occassionally makes me sit through this drivel while eating and getting indigestion off the TV.

Maybe someone would be kind enough to enlighten me on this completely useless issue.

Thanks for any/all comments and have a great weekend.

In the show the police work along side the CSI crew. Even so I would imagine being at a crime scene may require even CSI units to be armed. Not sure if this happens in real life or is just used for dramatic effect. The whole thing is fictionalized of course. In real life getting DNA results takes months, on TV it's all done in a few days.

CSI was one of my favorite shows when it first started but after so many seasons it's started getting repetitive so I hardly watch it anymore.

The actual way in which the work gets done is closer to what NCIS has. Of course there are alway difference between units and division. However, the work will always be divide up between the squints as well. In the lab a tech would have either one or two specialties, again depending on the departments involved. Usuall there would even be a difference between a field tech person and a lab tech person. Yes the speed is also very slow though that also depends on the department. I have known some to get DNA results performed as quickly as two weeks, if someone wanted me to get the job done it would only take about 2 hours , its very simple process. Techs do not carry guns and are not cops. If it was all done by the same person it would lead to potential biases during the course of the investigation.

Thanks Virgin and Stoutman for taking the time to reply.

There is only one series I ever got into and that's Doctor Who. Especially the older stuff. But that's a different story alltogether.

OK, the gun toting bit I can understand I suppose, it is an American series and your police officer do all carry guns from what I understand.

Stoutman, pardon my ignorance but what is a 'squint'? In british English it is an eye condition and I am pretty sure you weren't referring to that. Must be an American colloquialism that I am not familiar with. I would appreciate if you could elaborate a little on this. Thank you.

So, pretty much as I had presumed, there is an awful lot of, let's call it 'poetic licence' involved.

And no way on gods green earth will I tell my wife about NCIS. This is bad enough, at least in my opinion, no need for any more. I did enjoy the initial feature length programme when it was first aired but after that and as with all series' the pattern pretty quickly emerges and I don't need to be told umpteen times that we are now whising out the bottle of luminol to make the blood stains visible. Well, whatever, the programme does seem to have a huge following around the world. So good luck to them.

Thanks again guys.

Sorry a squint is another colloquilism for techs. It has been used a lot in shows from time to time but I believed used the most in the show "Bones". It is in reference to the way that the science geeks squint so much from looking through microscopes. Being of that variety myself I can see where it came frome and why!

Unfortunately due to the over dramatization of how "cool" it is to be a CSI scores of my students have had the desire to do that for a living. The sad reality gets them in the end after seeing the stacks and stacks of highly repetitive lab tests, almost all of which is completely automated so one only needs know how to run the machine and how to do or what the test really is for.

Thanks again Stoutman, much appreciated. Sorry to such a pain in the arse. LOL

Matter settled then. Pretty much what I had expected. TV, no more, no less.

All those police shows might be the only shows I don't watch. Allthough I haven't watched much shows since the early 2000's. Almost everything I liked got canned.
