How likely is this? Essex drain cleaner strikes gold.

I thought this really deserves sharing for the sheer beauty and almost unbelievable unlikelyhood of this true story. Read as it unfolded...

Last Friday, a drain cleaner working for the local Council was cleaning the drains in Leigh-on-Sea, a suburb of Southend. While he was busy doing that, up popped a watch and would you believe it, it was yellow gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph worth some 21,000 pounds. Honest guy that he is, he handed it in to the police.

Now, and this is where things get absolutely crazy, yesterday while doing the drains in Chalkwell, another suburb of Southend, lo and behold, up popped another watch. Dare I say it? It was, you've guessed it, an even newer model Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph worth 25,000 pounds. He rang his boss and said 'you never believe what I just found'. He handed the second Rolex in to the police.

In the meantime the BBC had gotten wind of the story, sent a camera team to Southend to interview him and for great effect asked him to do a drain during the interview. Would you believe it? While the crew was filming him, this time he dragged up a Frank Fisher yellow gold watch, worth some 10,000 pounds, live on TV.

Hey, talk about a stroke of luck, ey? He's only a young chap, 28, seems a really nice fella. Now, unless the rightful owner(s) claim them within the next 30 days, all three watches will be his. I seriously wish him luck with this one.

Talk about strange life stories.

Feel free to read it on the BBC News website.
This is the article about the first find:

This one about the second:

Unfortunately, the interview with the live find is not online yet. That was really funny, I saw it on the TV earlier.

Yea, nice fello to turn it over to the police, real nice. Granted that those watches belonged to people far more wealthier then him, who did not care about them enough to even attempt to get them out of the drain.
I would probably kept at least one of them.

It's so unusual that three obviously wealthy people would lose their watches in the same way.

I guess you could even say that...the rich...*puts on sunglasses*...are running out of time.

Just a quick update on this. Currently it appears that the police are focussing on the watches having been part of a haul from a break in at some point but so far no takers for them. Hey, three weeks to go and the first one is his. Nice one, I thought he was a very nice soft spoken chap.

The semi-conclusion to the story... (extract from the BBC News article published on 23. Feb.)

Rolex found in Chalkwell drain reunited with owner

A 21,000 GBP Rolex watch which was discovered in an Essex drain has been reunited with its owner.

The watch, discovered by a street cleaner near Chalkwell railway station two weeks ago, was stolen in a burglary in September, police said...

...PC Calley Mackay said the watches had been stolen from a nearby house on 11 September. The Rolex was given to the owner by his late wife.

The owner of the watches described the street cleaner as "the most honest man in England". He gave him the replicas as a reward.

My comment:
What remains unclear is what about the other Rolex and the Frank Fisher watch Large also found, I've not heard anything about those yet.
