Here's a really sick one:

What's worse than letting Michael jackson put the kids to bed?

Letting Ian Huntley give them a bath.

Sorry to play spoilsport but who is Ian Huntley and what is he (in)famous for?

Yes, ignorance is bliss sometimes. LOL

Where were you 9 years ago? On 4th August 2002, he murdered a couple of kids at a place called Soham in Cambridgeshire and his defence was that one slipped over in the bath and drowned while the other one suffocated while he was trying to stifle her screams.

There's a lot of doubt about his case. He was a perky enough guy before he was arrested but they put him straight away into a looney bin and came out a walking vegetable. The reason they arrested him was they found some of the kids' burnt clothes in his dustbin but curiously enough the bin was one of the places that had been searched a week earlier with nothing found.

In court he was a trembling wreck but when he tried to speak the judge stopped the trial and postponed it while he had another stay in the funny farm. Finally during the second trial he simply sat there trembling, doped up to the ears. It was his lawyer who read out his "confession" on his behalf.

The questions which arise were, if the bodies were found charred beyond recognition right next to the airfield at Lakenheath, how come the security cameras had no shots of them being dumped and burnt? Why did it take so long to find some "evidence" in Huntley's bin? How come the amazing change in his comportment and why was he put in a looney bin straight away instead of kept in prison custody as usual? There's more questions but that's enough for the moment.

One theory is that it might have been the work of an American airman. Lakenheath was one of the key airfields in the invasion of Iraq, which was very unpopular at the time. Nobody in their right mind believed for a minute that Saddam had nuclear weapons under his bed and a murder, especially of a couple of kids by US forces, would have weakened the British stance even more.

A quick look through the records of all the inhabitants of Soham would have made Huntly the ideal scapegoat. He had a few accusations against him in the past.

(One interesting point is that a month later, one of the senior police officers investigating the murder was arrested himself in an anti pedophile sting operation. Talk about the kettle calling the pot "black").

Where was I August 4, 2002? Easy, holiday season. We were in Mombasa at the time, since we were living in Kenya then anyway. I am afraid, if it ever made it in the news in Kenya, I missed it but then, you tend to be more concerned with what is going on around you then something that happened a continent away.

But thank you very much for enlightening me on this. I had no idea. Reading your post I was beginning to wonder if you might not be British yourself. Not that we are, we're both German but have chosen Britain as our retirement home so to speak.

A lot of questions left unanswered as you rightly pointed out and it would appear somewhat unlikely for the whole truth ever to come to light.

That being said, my wife still does some work as a companion to some well off elderly women, so she had to get an enhanced disclosure here. The whole thing was a joke at the end of the day. Had she not disclosed on the form that she wasn't actually British herself, she could have told them that pigs can fly. The normal check would merely have entailed checking in Essex, how dumb is that. Just quickly pop over the border to Suffolk and start a nice killing spree there and you're fine here. No, that side of the so called 'safeguard' I found to be rather pointless on the whole.

Thanks again for taking the time to post this. Much appreciated.

Hi there, I'm a Brit, 65 and retired, but I've lived in france since I was 18. Born and went to school in Dagenham which was once upon a time in Essex. Now it's Greater London. I followed the Soham affair because it was on our TV too. The one who pissed me off was that smug vicar dishing out the condoleances. He got an OBE or whatever vicars get for good perfomance. Ten years later he's still cashing in on it. After that, every vicar in the UK was praying he could have a couple of kids killed in his own parish.

As for Kenya, at one time I used to hang about the 680 hotel in Nairobi. Some of the best times in my whole life, but that's another story. (It wasn't a casino in those days).

Beat you to it Ragnar, 53 here and all but completely retired three years ago, these days I only have two clients left and that's only because they were with me from the start and I felt it was wrong to let them down now.

So, a fellow semi Kenyan, ey? Well, that's nice, we gotta stick together. I presume you used to work in the tourist industry then? We've never stayed at that many hotels but that was due to me being born in my parents house in Thika but I have spent some nights at the Milimani and the Panafric, mostly because in those days some of the Block family were friends of my parents.

The only other hotel was the Shelly Beach in Mombassa, which was run by Micheal Winterbottom and when he was out of hospital being treated for yet another bout of malaria, he was one of my parents best friends ever. Shame that the place burnt down. I know, it was a bit rough round the edges but it was the people that ran the place that always made it for us.

Later my mum decided to buy a plot in the Ngong Hills, just below the Knuckle, overlooking Ngong Village in the distance there used to stand a single bent and twisted accacia and she would sit under that for hours if not days. They never got round to building much up there, the economy went down the drain after Mois last election bid and then she had a stroke half way up Mt. Kenya which left her right side completely paralysed and since she had always been the driving force in the family, things just didn't go well after that. But that's another story alltogether.

Originally we had intended to retire there but my wife felt it was to 'out of the way' family-wise, so, since we both love Britain, Britain it was. I'd have settled for Sydney, the only large city where I ever felt at home but that was right out. Even Mr O'Leary hasn't managed to offer 10 quid flights to down-under, yet. LOL

But living on the Thames Estuary, actually, hardly more then a stones throw from where you were born, is nice, especially this year. the neighbours had another BBQ yesterday, it was that warm. The pansies on the cliffs are in full flower, the first tulips are making an appearance and most the trees on the cliffs have already started producing leaf buds. God help us, should we now get some serious frost, that'll blow Tiptree right out of the water this year.

Also, thanks for the additional info about those child cases. I did do a bit of reading up on it on the web. Dreadful, makes you wonder what good those CRB checks actually are.
