I think the point of underwear (aside from hygienic purposes) is so the goodies don't get chafed. Thongs are easy for me to wear because I only have to worry about front coverage. Brazilians are meant for smaller bums I think (which I don't have) so I find them a bit hard to stay in a comfortable place. But they sure are pretty. Here is a picture of a pair.

As for not wearing any? Well, I work with children, so I would feel very strange walking around without underwear on under my jeans/skirt/dress. I probably would walk around naked more at home if I didn't have a open door policy for my friends and family.
