Hi you guys, looks like they are having real problems configuring the software. I only know too well what that feels like, I admin a forum that was run by a bunch of inept cretins that messed the whole setup up. So, you might as well offer your assistance, should you really be familiar with such issues and I don't mean configuring a local windows installation but a) an Apache server and b) the board software including all the relevant security issues.
Don't ask me, I'll be busy on our site for some time yet. |

May I again request that the whole forum be made 'private'? I know, the pic/vid section has been private for a while but personally, I don't think that that's sufficient.
Google can happily read all your posts and algorithms are smart enough to analyse usernames and references made to other nicks used outside this forum for them to be able to build up a nice database of who and what you are or claim to be. As I said in another post, I do co-run a doc forum as admin and it is easy enough to set 'Guest' account priviliges to be able to only see the content of the forum, yet deny access to the posts content, which is what I'd be keen on. You still get almost the same exposure on google, if that is what you are after, building up your membership numbers, but at least what people feel is private, stays private, unless of course you forget to assign bots to the 'Guest' priviliges ruleset. I don't know how often google comes by here but I know for a fact that on our site, google pretty much reads every post in realtime, allthough it only gets as far as the post title. Also, are member profiles visible to bots? This, if it was the case, should also be dealt with, unless it was when the forum was set up. Just my two cents worth on privacy. |

Maybe you can dangle the carrot of not having to flush the spider logs all the time before him. LOL
It is always possible that admin does want the google and other spider exposure. On our forum we let them go about their business for several weeks after it had been set up originally and then shut them out. Main reason was that despite all efforts google still managed to get into the member profile section and some had posted their email so it was visible also to non-admins. Bad move. Also, somewhere I noticed that you had made a post about deleting spam and spammers. Is that much of a problem? If so, I'd suggest you register with Quote:
Thought that might come in helpful. We've reduced spammers by roughly 98%, the 2% that slip the net... well, nothing is foolproof but this one is pretty close. |

Thanks tiny. Yes, implementing the changes I suggested does require you to have full access to the ACP, as it involves changing the source code of a couple of scripts.
I've not worked with VBulletin before, so I can't comment on how easily this could be done, we use IP.Board from IPS. At least there, should someone mess up, you can always reset the altered scripts to their original status. Anyway, thanks for passing it on and that spam database is pretty good but like with everything else, it is always only a reaction to something, never a proactive approach. |
